Week 2 - choreographic devices

Choreographic devices

In todays lesson we did two main tasks.
The first task we did was working in partners to piece together one of each improvisation tasks that we completed in last lesson to create a mid length choreographic element. My partner Rachel used her number piece and I used my name. Once we combined them, we then added different choreographic devices the aim of this task was to add diverse movements and to make the piece look more complicated in stylistic way. The devices we included were: unison, contrast, retrograde, embellishment, repetition and climax. These were out of seventeen given choreographic devices. I felt like we both contributed equally to creating the piece and was an enjoyable task to work together on.
The second task we did was independently using our zodiac signs to create a short piece, this was based on a list of words both strengths and weaknesses given to each zodiac sign which are used to describe the person of that sign. My zodiac sign is Libra and the words that given as strengths were: idealistic, just, strong social skills, aesthetic, charming, artistic, beautiful and kind-hearted. Then the words given as weaknesses were: hesitant, narcissistic, lazy and freewheeling.
The aim of the task was to create movement based on the words given. In my piece I used some of the words from both weaknesses and strengths to add more variety, such as: artistic, beautiful, kind-hearted, lazy and hesitant. To adapt this piece further I added in some of the different choreographic devices to make the piece more diverse and eye catching. The devices I used in my piece were: repetition, contrast, retrograde, embellishment and improvisation around a theme. I chose these devices as I was able to emphasize the change in the piece from the original to the adapted one.

  1. I love the use of contrasting levels in your duet piece because I feel like it makes what could have been quite simple movements initially, very interesting and unique. Your solo piece is engaging, flows really nicely and I can see that you thought carefully about including choreographic devices. Maybe you could explain a little more how you made your movements relate to your zodiac attributes? Was it your execution of the movements, or did your actions symbolise something?

    1. Thank you for your comment.
The movements in my zodiac piece have been created to link into the words given. Therefore, my aim was to relate certain movements to my zodiac.

  2. You have included some interesting points within your blog!

Please title as Week 2- Choreographic Devices

Please think about the following points:
    - More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed. (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
    - How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
    - Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
    - Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
    - Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
    - What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?

What you have written about your zodiac task is good however I would like you be more reflective in your writing.

    Think about:
What movements did you use to portray certain qualities/ emotions?
Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?

Thank you for linking your videos in your writing, as a reader this has shown a clear connection between your writing and your videos!

      first task-
Including choreographic devices in this piece gave it more variety and depth. One of the strengths of this task was being able to work in partners and give each other feedback as well. The aim of the task was readable to the audience and it was successful. Performing these in front of the class was to see whether you could see the adaptations others had made and being able to identify devices from different pieces.

      task 2 zodiac-
At the beginning of my piece i walked forwards and then back this was to show hesitation. I think the aim of my movement came across slightly to the audience (sections of the piece) and the weakness of this piece was the audience being able to read all the words I was portraying. To improve on this i will adapt certain movement so that they show in more detail the word they link to. Strengths of this task was being able to use the zodiac words to create movement linking to these.

  3. The beginning of your duet was very original with you crouched and your partner standing up doing the same movements. After reading your piece I wondered how you were going to develop your choreographic ideas.
