Week 4-Key practitioner lesson 2

Exploring choreographers and creative tasks

In today’s lesson we explored two different choreographers and completed one task that explored one of the choreographers processes. The choreographers we explored with Crystal Pike and Wayne McGregor. As a class we watched several videos of some of their of choreography. One of the videos we watched were Crystal Pike’s choreography of ‘Flight patterns’. From watching this we were able to explore her choreographic processes. Some of her processes are using her emotions towards situations based on a real world events as a way of expressing how she feels and is her a way of coping with the issue.  Also she uses conflict as a tool towards the subjects she is exploring and for the movements from the body. Another unusual way of choreographing is that she uses her family involvement within the choreography piece making her pieces have a lot more of a personal feeling .

Where as Wayne McGregor uses very different processes in comparison to Crystal the two videos we watched of when McGregors choreography were ‘Genus’ and ‘Infra’.His choreographic processes for ‘Genus’ we are having inspiration such as annotations, illustrations and visualisations. This was including Charles Darwin which links science into his pieces such as equilibrium. Also, his piece ‘Infra’ he did a lot of research based task and then created his movement then found the music.

The task we did linked to our research of one the choreographers,it was based on Wayne McGregors research and visualisation process.  We watched a video of rain and carefully explored how we could share this using movement that’s flowing and highlights to the audience the aim of the movement .
My movement started as a single raindrop and was dynamically slow and was small, but then I increased the movement size as well as the dynamics to create more of a driblet of rain.  We started on our own and did individual movements then joined with others in our class to form more of a puddle formed by raindrops we then reverted this process (retrograding) and went from a puddle to a single raindrop these movements were all based on the one video of rain explored.

Another one of our creative tasks was incorporating our zodiac signs which had lists of words for strengths and weaknesses. We then used these words to adapt movement in order for the audience to link it to the words. My zodiac sign is Libra and a few of my words were: lazy, kind hearted, hesitant and  beautiful. The aim of my choreography for this piece was to allow the words to be expressed through my movement. To adapt this further I would add some choreographic devices to add more aspects to the movement and to create more complicated movement from simple movement.
These are my words for the zodiac:

  1. I enjoyed reading about your experiences within the different tasks. When doing the raindrop improvisation did you face any challenges? What improvements would you make if you were to do it again?

    1. Thank you for your comment.
When doing the raindrop task I found it difficult to create movement which linked to the idea of rain. I would think carefully about the task and see what I can interpret.

  2. I like the way you have compared both choreographers and made some good points. What movements did you do to show the traits of your zodiac sign? Did you enjoy this creative task?

An example of my zodiac choreography is that i did walks forward and then walks back to show the word hesitant.
I did enjoy this creative task.

  3. I like the way you have linked the choreographers to the creative tasks from the lessons. Which of the tasks did you find most challenging and how did you overcome the challenge.

    1. Thank you.
The task which i found most difficult was the raindrop one as i struggled to create movement based around rain.

  4. Excellent work! Looking back at your reflective notes on each creative exercise we completed during class (including Name, Phone Number, Zodiac, Shape, Rain Concept), summarise how you responded to each one. Think about; what did you find easy or difficult, was your movement readable to your audience, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas?

Task name - I found this task fairly easy as it was just drawing out my name in different ways. The movement I did to the audience would reflect onto my name. This process has helped me with my final choreography piece, I am going to write out depression.

Task phone- I found this task quite difficult but once I got the idea of it the task itself became a lot easier. I believe if the audience didn’t have a list of the actions to the numbers they wouldn’t fully understand. This process hasn’t been involved in my own choreography.

Task Zodiac- I really enjoyed this task and found it really good to do. The audience would also only understand if they had the adjectives as well as watching the performance to pick out key adjectives they see. I have used this process but in a different way as I’m using the symptoms as adjectives in my piece.

Task shape- This task was one I felt was difficult due to the abstract shapes and patterns people had drawn and having to figure out how to express these. I’m not using this process as it was one I found difficult.

Task rain- I also found this task quite challenging. I feel the audience would be able to read this task to a point because of the movement involved. I haven’t used this exact process but I have involved improvisation in my piece.
